A nicho, also known as a “retablo” is a box-like object of Latino folk art that is created from mixed media and typically combines elements from the popular culture, music, spirituality and iconic figures. Nichos can serve as a religious altar to mark a special event, or to honor a favorite patron Saint. Using 2 small stretched canvases, you will paint, embellish and assemble a Nicho that uses hinges to be a free-standing “altar”. It will open and close and includes a metal “closure”. A very unique and self-gratifying project to honor your loved ones or a favorite icon/patron saint.
Unique items that will be available for your assemblage will be: tin & aluminum metals, hardware, alcohol based markers/inks, beads, clay & small plastic figurines. Basic assemblage techniques will be taught and ideas/samples will be available to spark your flow. Create while listening to the melodies of Mexican Ballads. All supplies & materials are included. You may bring your own special trinkets that hold special meaning to you if you wish to include them in your Nicho.
